Artificial Intelligence and its integration in education!

What is Artificial Intelligence?

The term “Artificial Intelligence” refers to the IT field that deals with the design and implementation of computer systems. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence of a machine or computer that enables it to imitate or mimic human capabilities, such as:

  • learning,
  • design, and
  • creativity.

Through Artificial Intelligence (AI), machines can solve problems for achieving specific goals. The computer receives data, processes them, and responds based on them. (https://www.europarl.europa.eu/)

Artificial Intelligence systems can adapt their behavior, to a certain extent, by analyzing the consequences of previous actions and solve problems autonomously.

Artificial Intelligence in everyday life

Artificial Intelligence has become an integral part of our life. Let’s see some examples where Artificial Intelligence is being used in our everyday life:

  • Smart “assistants”, e.g., SIRI, Alexa, Google assistant.
  • Autonomous Driving.
  • Recognition of faces, images, and sounds.
  • Personalized recommendations e.g., for movies, music, hotels.

All the above are some examples where Artificial Intelligence applies in our everyday life.

Artificial Intelligence and Education

Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη και Εκπαίδευση 1During the Covid-19 pandemic, we understood how technology has already and will change our life. The educational community rapidly faced the new era regarding the educational procedure

Educators, students, and parents saw that tablets, mobile phones and computers can become the main educational tools during the educational procedure. Webex, where online courses took place during the pandemic, is not an Artificial Intelligence tool, but it is a start.

Today, most learning management tools are enabled with Artificial Intelligence capabilities in order to maximise best results of learning through technology.

Most educational institutions are turning into Artificial Intelligence in order to be modernized and upgraded. The future of education comes through Artificial Intelligence.

Integration of Artificial Intelligence to education

Artificial Intelligence obviously affects education. Artificial Intelligence can accelerate personalized learning, provide learners with continuous assessment and feedback, and apply learning analytics to differentiate the learning process in order to adapt to individual learners’ needs in real time. (UNESCO, 2020).

Following you may see some problems that can be solved through Artificial Intelligence (AI).

PROBLEMS AI SOLUTION
The standard educational program/process can’t respond to personalized needs. Personalized learning.
Evaluation and grating are time-consuming processes and are mostly based on multiple-choice questions. Artificial Intelligence can evaluate open-ended questions in real time.
The big number of students in a classroom means that not all questions, of every single students are answered. Virtual classroom assistants.
Personalized communication is impossible. Chatbots can answer administrative questions from parents, staff and students quickly.
Increasing rates of dropping out of the educational process. Sentimental analysis through AI.
Plagiarism. AI can recognize patterns and data from sources.
Based in  How artificial intelligence is disrupting education

According to CNN Greece, in some countries applications have already been used in order to develop and upgrade the educational system. In this way educators spend more time focusing into things that matter the most.

Some application examples are the following:

    • Applications that eliminate exam evaluation time, apps that recognize students’ weaknesses and adapt personalized tests and material according to their needs, helping them with personalized learning.
    • Applications that can translate in real-time to different languages.
    • Programs that can read students’ handwriting and evaluate it.

In the educational field the use of Artificial Intelligence has not come at a level of wide-spread use. The choice of adopting AI by large companies and institutions in the educational field and the research that is being made, secures that soon enough educators and students will have to adopt applications in their everyday learning life.

The present and the future of education is Artificial Intelligence.

e-VET4AI

Pandemic’s impacts have also affected the VET system. It is therefore necessary to invest in trainers’ digital skills, providing tools to support online teaching, and in technologies.

In the light of this comes the project “e-VET for Artificial Intelligence” (e-VET4AI) particularly focused on the mechanical segment (Industry4.0) which is being implemented since December 2021.

e-VET4AI Aim

The project aims to support trainers active in mechanical training courses, in the development of new digital skills and confidence in the use of new teaching methodologies, to be integrated within more traditional teaching methods.

Project results

During the project’s implementation the following will be created:

  • VET Self-Assessment Tool (e-VET SAT) for Digital Proficiency
  • e-VET4AI training model (e-VET4AI TM)
  • e-VETrainers platform and app.
