Vocational Education and Training (VET) is becoming an essential driver of workforce development across Europe. As labor market demands shift, Higher VET schools are playing a critical role in equipping professionals with the necessary skills to meet industry needs. Based on projections from Cedefop, several key professions are expected to experience substantial growth by 2035, reinforcing the urgency of aligning education with these evolving trends.
The demand for Health Associate Professionals is projected to rise to 7.14 million jobs, marking a 33% increase since 2009. An aging population and the expansion of healthcare services are fueling this growth, making well-trained professionals indispensable. Similarly, ICT Technicians will see a 50% increase, surpassing 2 million positions as digital transformation continues to reshape industries.
Science and Engineering Technicians—one of the largest professional groups—are set to expand to 8.5 million jobs by 2035, underscoring the importance of STEM-related VET pathways. Meanwhile, Legal and Social Associate Professionals will grow to 4.83 million jobs, a 56% rise since 2009, highlighting the increasing need for expertise in law, social work, and community support.
While many sectors are experiencing rapid expansion, some roles are facing a decline. Hospitality and Retail Managers, for example, are projected to see a drop from 2.8 million jobs in 2009 to 2.25 million by 2035, signaling changing consumer habits and automation’s impact on traditional service industries.
These trends reinforce the pivotal role of Higher VET in addressing both current and future labor market needs. As automation, e-commerce, artificial intelligence, and digitalization reshape industries, Higher VET institutions are stepping up to support Europe’s digital and green transitions.
What Does This Mean for VET?
To remain a driving force in employment and innovation, Higher VET must:
✅ Adapt curricula to align with emerging skills demands.
✅Strengthen digital and STEM education pathways to support technology-driven professions.
✅Prepare the workforce for an increasingly dynamic and fast-changing economy.
As Europe navigates these workforce shifts, Higher VET schools must continue evolving to ensure that future professionals are equipped with the right knowledge and practical expertise. The challenge ahead is clear: are we ready to embrace the transformation and make VET an even stronger pillar of Europe’s economic growth?
