What is the case in Greece in every Region regarding the SDGs?
The research
The Regional Policy Monitor (RPM) released the research of Phoebe Koundouri (head of the research group at AUEB) and her team, where the progress towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the regional level in Greece, was measured. The first recording of progress towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at regional level in Greece was held by:
- SDSN Greece,
- Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB),
- “Athena” Research & Innovation Information Technologies,
- “Regional Policy Monitor” (RPM) , with the support of Data Consultants.
Research’s results
According to the research, the 2022 SDG Index and Dashboards for Greek regions generates five major findings:
- No region has met the following SDG, while most of the regions face significant challenges.
- SDG 1, No Poverty.
- SDG 2, No Hunger.
- SDG 4, Quality Education.
- SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy.
- SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth.
- SDG 9, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
- SDG 10, Reduced Inequalities.
- SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities.
- SDG 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
- One region has already met the following SDG, whereas the rest of the regions face medium to minor challenges.
- SDG 3, Good Health, and Well-Being.
- SDG 5, Gender Equality.
- SDG 6, Clean Water and Sanitation.
- SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy.
- SDG 15, Life on Land.
- Two regions have already met the goal for SDG 14 – Life Below Water, whereas the rest of the regions face medium to major challenges, indicating significant heterogeneity in the subnational performance of the regions.
- The regions of Attica, Southern Aegean and Crete will have to try harder to overcome significant challenges towards achieving the SDGs until 2030, given that more than 60% of the Greek population resides in these areas (Eurostat, 2022).
- There is a significant lack of reliable data at regional level for most of the key performance indicators for SDG 12 and SDG 17, underlying the need for improving the availability of data at a subnational, NUTS2 level.
Regions’ Score
Thessaly and the Ionian Islands are at the top of the Index for 2022, with the former being the sole Greek region that has already fulfilled more than half of the requirements towards 2030. Yet, even for these top performing regions major challenges remain in order to achieve all 17 SDGs.
Following you will find the final score of each region. The score is the normalized mean of all indices for all SDGs and given on a scale of 1-100.
