Participation of p-consulting in CJLL’s Summer School in Italy

In the first week of July, the Law School of the University of Palermo, led by Professor Nicola Gullo, organized the Summer School of the CJLL project. The main theme of the courses was Democracy and Climate Justice, with more than 50 law students from Italy, Spain, Ukraine, and other countries outside Europe actively participating. Our p-consulting team spent a week in Sicily, engaging in fascinating lectures by academics and experts on climate change and justice.

The summer school began on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the Law School of the University of Palermo and concluded on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at the impressive former monastery Padri Riformati in the village of Petralia Sottana in Northern Sicily. Students had the opportunity to attend lectures by distinguished guests such as Prof. Shashikala Gurpur, the Dean of the Law School of Symbiosis International University in India, and Valentina Abalmasova from the University of Mariupol in Ukraine. During the last two days, the students themselves took the stage to present their projects on Climate Justice.

The lectures covered a variety of topics related to Climate Law and climate change. Noteworthy were discussions on human mobility and the climate changes it causes, energy transition, the climate crisis in various ecosystems, Climate Law and the efficiency of its procedures, conflicts of interest in an environmental context, the role of the European Court of Human Rights in protecting climate-related rights, and the environmental destruction caused by the war in Ukraine.

We left Sicily filled with images and knowledge about the critical issue of climate change and the steps our societies are taking through Justice to safeguard the rights of future generations and protect the environment. Following the Summer School, short educational videos on the topics discussed in Palermo will be created and made available through the project’s website to anyone interested.

The CJLL project will conduct another workshop in the coming months, this time via an online platform, with participants from various social science fields and environmental groups. Stay tuned for more.
